WRITTEN STATEMENT:

My inquiry question is "How do I use makeup as a way to mask emotional instability?" When I feel most vulnerable is when I look my best. I hide behind a mask of makeup, so no one sees my mess of emotions. I started my process using makeup, then makeup on glass, and then paint on glass to show the abstract idea. In image 1, the chaos shows how I feel starting the process of applying makeup. To show the disconnect between the mask and my emotions, I used glass to paint makeup on. Image 2 uses the same glass, but a more controlled painted look. The image is ruined fragmentation, where the emotion shows. Image 3 shows that in a world of black and white turmoil, red lipstick can mask it all. In image 4, I use a wipe showing futile attempts to erase emotion. Image 5 is when I get frustrated, wipe it off, and then reapply my mask. Image 6 shows the darkness that comes with a simple reflection; represented by pills. In image 7, the condensation shows my clouded emotions. Image 8 is a clean lip, split into pieces like my emotions. In image 9, I try to convey all repressed emotion behind my eyes. Lastly, we have a blue eye painted so heavily that only the “window to the soul” looks real.
